The life of a Doberman…

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 | Uncategorized | No Comments

Man they have it rough.  My dogs just kind of spread out throughout the house seeking soft spots.  :)  I happened to grab my camera and catch this totally CLASSIC doberman moment….

(This is Rommel….he has a tough life)

I have a bunch of video of Brownie’s dad that I have been meaning to go through. Tonight I FINALLY got it all put on my hard drive, and was able to convert part of it to WMA format.

There is ALOT more where this came from…I just have to get around to converting it and uploading it.

Alfreds Ball.

I got this in the mail today…..it made me cry.

It came addressed to me, but I know it is meant for Brownie.

So why did a worn out ball in a brown box make me cry? (Other than the fact that I am a total sap anyway….)

It belonged to Brownie’s dad. It was his favorite. Just like Brownie…he was a dog that ALWAYS had to have something in his mouth. This is the same ball that he would charge you with…slam into your stomach and munch, munch, munch. The same ball that traveled with him, the same ball he carried around day after day.

For those who don’t know, Alfred was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer) when Brownie’s litter was 5 weeks old. Melody did the best she could to manage the pain for a short period of time, and then gave him the last gift an owner can give their friend…. It was all very sudden, and it was really devastating.

I know that he was her once in a lifetime dog, and I am really proud to have one of his sons. I know how much Alfred’s “things” mean to her, so for her to send Brownie Alfred’s favorite ball means alot to me.

Some photos of Alf with that ball when he was here in January.

RIP Alfred.

Have I really not posted since July 13th? I should be ashamed…Things have been really busy around here. Good News: I am not moving! I am staying in North Carolina!

I will do a short update on the puppers, and then I **PROMISE** I am going to keep this darn blog updated!

Piper:

Piper
Well….what is there to say? She is still a spoiled little princess. She is actually in Florida right now soaking up the rays and swimming in grandma’s pool. She will be back on Sunday.

Rommel:

Rommel is REALLY coming along nicely in obedience. I would like to say THANK YOU to my trainer Richard Shook (www.southlanddogsports.com) for all of his help and guidance. There were so many things with Rom that needed to be re-trained. I just really got to a point where I didn’t know “where to go from here”. Everything needed cleaning up, and honestly…I had the puzzle pieces I just didn’t know how to put them together. His heeling is very, very nice now, he pivots with me forward and backward, his focus is there, and he side steps like a pro. Richard told me that the most important part of a heeling routine is the left turn, (Yes there is only one left turn in a SchH OB routine…but he still maintains his position that it is the most important..haha) you can tell alot about the training by watching the left turn…..well……Rommel has a BEAUTIFUL left turn. :D He maintains focus, does not forge or bump me, and side steps to maintain the proper position. I also had alot of trouble with getting a consistent straight sit when we hault. Going back and reteaching the basic position has almost completely solved that problem. It is rare for him to be out of place. I have taught him the flip-finish, the international about turn (rather than the go around) and right now we are working on dumbbells. Rom is such a willing worker though. He just wants to make me happy. Honestly, Rommel LIKES obedience. I am working toward doing an OB1 with him at our trial in December. We have alot of work to do with the retrieves, but we are getting there! Of all of my dogs…I am really proud of Rommel. He was my first, and he tries so damn hard. :D

Ziris:

Ziris is doing awesome. Her foundation work is solid, and things were done the RIGHT way with her! We are working on so many things with her right now that I don’t really even know where to begin. Well…….. Tracking. Obedience. Protection. :D Heheh. All coming along very nicely. Let’s just say that she will be coming soon to a trial near you….

Brownie:

Is 6 months old!!!!!!!!!!! We have brought him out a few times and done bitework, but I am pretty much just letting him grow up. He is going to be a beast.

Chomp:

Oh yes…we have added Chomp to the pack! He is co-owned with his breeder and I will be showing him. He is an awesome little puppy, and he *thinks* he runs the place. Haha. He is very good in the house, and as sweet as they come.

Mystery Man:

Then there is “Mystery Man” who I have here for training. I won’t go into details now, but he is 4 years old, he is from working lines…and he is living with me as of a few weeks ago. If all works out well, I will train him in Schutzhund until his breeder finds the right working home for him. If not, I am going to do basic obedience with him, and his breeder is going to place him in a pet home. He is actually a very nice dog. Maybe I will disclose more information about him soon…….we will see.

Well…I guess that is about it. Check back SOON…because I WILL be updating this thing!
