Training Day :)

Well, I forgot to write in my blog yesterday, I told you I am not good at remembering to do this.
Brownie did his first “puppy track” yesterday! Actually it was a puppy box, but either way it is laying the foundation for his tracking. He did really good! When we got there, there were several other dogs already tracking and with tracks laid, so we had to wait a bit. When I finally decided on a spot to lay his puppy box I noticed there were ants all over. GREAT! Just what I want, fire ants on his hotdogs. So, we moved to a nice shady spot with no ants. I laid his little box, then waited only a minute or so and brought him over to it. The first thing he did was try to attack one of the flags, he thought that was great fun. I just redirected him to the ground and said “such” and away he went devouring hot dogs. He had never had a hot dog before, so this was great! He did get distracted a few times, but with me redirecting him and telling him “such” he went right back to work. One thing that I was really happy with was that by the time we were almost finished he was already sniffing out the edges of the box and turning around to go back inside of it. Progress already! Way to go Brownie!!!
Ziris is coming into heat, so I decided against bringing her, and brought Rommel instead. It never hurts to brush up on his obedience, and he really enjoys doing it. Rommels obedience was awesome yesterday. He had excellent focus during heeling, his long down was perfect (even with a lady playing ball with her rottie) His sits were straight, I only had to correct him once for a crooked sit. One thing about Rommel’s heeling that annoys me (and I am sure that it has something to do with my foundation with him) is that for the first 20 or 30 steps he swings his butt out wide rather than being in the proper position. It is like he is over excited and is TRYING to give me really good focus, but instead he is giving me an inproper heel position. After he gets that out of his system though, he is good for the rest of the time. Dogs…… One thing that Rommel and I do need to work on is his “finish” He has a very nice, fast recall, a straight sit in front of me, but for some reason he is kind of avoiding the finish. He looks at me like “huh, are you sure that is what you want??” Maybe he just doesnt understand it, either way, we need to work on it.
Overall, good training day.
